In support of the TIDES Surpise Language Exercise held in 2003, we expanded the English TempEx tagger to recognize time expressions in Cebuano and Hindi. We call this system "TempExSL," and it includes a number of features to facilitate porting to new languages. Lexical dependencies in the system were treated by creating an external lexicon. A quick start on porting the system was made by automatically adding target language vocabulary to existing patterns, and methods were developed for switching to language-specific versions as necessary and for running the system on sentence-aligned parallel corpora. Most system modifications are not language-specific. Note that the component of the original TempEx program that normalizes the meaning of the recognized expressions has not been updated to handle Cebuano or Hindi.
The work was performed by Beth Sundheim, Pankaj Khetarpal, and Robert Morris of SPAWAR Systems Center, and Lisa Ferro of The MITRE corporation.
